Dojo Protocol of Gentle Way


  • Study the Old, Understand the New - On Ko Chi Shin - Use the curriculum as a structured guide of graded levels to study and reflect on the wisdom and failures of the past, to innovate, to change, to grow in the study research and practice of the Gentle Way


  • One Thousand Days to Learn, Ten Thousand Days to Refine - Avoid becoming captive to the debilitating mirage of the perfect form but embrace the essence of Practice, Persistence, Perseverance and Patience


  • Mutual Benefit with Courtesy and Respect - Jita Kyoei - is paramount and should be consistent with dojo protocol.  Hubris should be abandoned but not humility and intellect in the study and practice of the Gentle Way. "A little learning is a dangerous thing, drink deep or taste not the Pierian spring"


  • Efficient Use of Energy - Seiryoko Zenyo - As some techniques take a lot more muscle and strength than others to be effective, a range of techniques utilising key principles of leverage and the Gentle Way should be explored to maximise the effectiveness of a practical  self defence for the individual


  • Mindfulness, Relaxed Focus and Intuitive Control - Mushin and Zanshin - A focussed approach to practice should introduce in a timely manner an understanding of the essential principles of the Gentle Way, thus developing skills and timing for a technique to be executed with relaxed, focussed and minimal effort, to be able to "Go with the flow, and more power to you"


  • Kata and Bunkai - Form, Function, Analysis and Disassembly - Tori (demonstrates technique) and Uke (receiver of technique) are critical components in understanding, practising, demonstrating, learning and applying techniques and principles in Kata, Bunkai, Goshin-Jitsu, Atemi-waza, Nage-waza, Katame-waza and Ukemi-waza with the higher rank leading and teaching under the guidance of the Sensei


  • No First Strike, Respond Appropriately - Karate ni Sente Nashi - Self Defence should be practiced, adapted and modified to suit the levels of ability, strength, fitness, age and experience of the individual and should be consistent with an appropriate response to a real or perceived conflict with reactive and pre-emptive applications


  • Do No Harm to Self and to Others - Modern Duty of Care for Self Defence  - Safety is paramount and legal responsibilities necessitate that training methods minimise the risk of injury and that lawful application of self defence must be consistent with the nature of the attack using reasonable force, with constraint and control thus preventing or stopping the threat to avoid harm to self and unnecessary harm to others
